Made up of immigrants from the former Soviet Union with backgrounds as varied as America itself, the RCC is a focal point for the preservation of Russia’s cultural heritage. We seek to educate and inspire people of all backgrounds. We support the continuity of Russian culture between generations. We create essential programs and provide services that welcome everyone to learn, grow and celebrate Russian life and culture in America.
Twenty years ago, two immigrants from the Soviet Union came to America with $176 and four suitcases. Vladimir and Elena had no resources other than their passion to succeed. At the time, there was little assistance in Washington State for Russian speakers. There were few lawyers, doctors or translators available and no one who could give them a clue where to start rebuilding their lives. Working for minimum wage at a Seattle restaurant, the two became the embodiment of the American dream. Sheer willpower and strength of character helped them to survive and eventually thrive in their new country.
Having experienced the desperate lack of resources for new immigrants and understanding how difficult it is to prosper in a place where no one speaks your language and there are few, if any, services available, Vladimir and Elena decided to do what they could to help others like themselves.
In January 2010, the Russian Community Center opened its doors. The idea that began in the hearts of two self-proclaimed “enthusiasts” has come to be a trusted resource for both Russian and American communities. People of all nations, professions and talents have come together to help others achieve their dreams.
Our mission is to sustain our vibrant culture and create continuity between generations of Russian immigrants. We aim to do this by supporting healthy families, providing essential human services and binding the diverse historical traditions of Slavic peoples. We will give of ourselves all that is required to help others in need, with a focus on Russian-speaking immigrants who want to experience the joy, beauty and success of American life.
As an organization we pledge to:
- Welcome all people regardless of national origin or creed
- Help Russian immigrants and their descendants connect to their history and culture and explore the diversity of all American cultures
- Teach the children of Russian immigrants so that they may grow into happy and healthy citizens of our global community
